Los Angeles County Recording Fees Debunked!

The last 15-20 years have seen a steady and dramatic increase in the cost for recording real estate related documents in the state of California, owing in large part to the growing list of surcharges and add-on fees that are imposed at the time of recordation. That got some of us here at FCS thinking, “What ARE all of these surcharges?”  To answer this question, we analyzed a recent receipt for a recording in Los Angeles County and here’s what we found:

Total Fee for Recording the Document – $79.00

Fee Title Charge Description
Basic Recording Fee $10.00 Base fee for recording and indexing a document
Fraud Notification $4.00 Additional charge imposed on recording of Deeds, Quitclaim Deeds and Deeds of Trust
D.A. Surcharge
$3.00 Additional charge for every real estate instrument, paper or notice except any deed subject to a documentary transfer tax
AB 1168 Redaction Fee $1.00 Fee to have the document reviewed for and redacted of sensitive information such as social security numbers
Electronic Recording Fee $1.00 Fee to raise funds to develop county electronic recording capabilities
Micrographics Fee $1.00 Fee to have the document imaged
Days of Operation Fee $1.00 Fee to cover the filing office hours of operation
Indexing $1.00 Additional charge to index a document containing more than ten names
Additional Page Fee (Revenue) $19.00 Fee for document containing additional pages
Additional Page Fee (State) $19.00 Fee for document containing additional pages
Additional Page Fee (Improvement) $19.00 Fee for document containing additional pages
